There are a wide number of industrial applications in which the flow of chemicals needs to be measured, and thankfully there are many cutting edge devices on the market that are specifically created for this purpose! There are several different types of chemical flow meters available on the market, with some of the most popular from being:
Electromagnetic Chemical Flow Meter
An electromagnetic flow meter is the chemical flow meter of choice for all electrically conductive liquids, for both acidic and alkaline applications. These types of flowmeter have been around for a while and have been used in various industries for more than 60 years.
Electromagnetic flowmeters are used for liquid monitoring, liquid filling, batching and precise blending of different liquids / chemicals.
How does it work? Electrically charged particles pass through the magnetic field created by the two field coils. Voltage is induced and it is this voltage that is in fact directly proportional to the velocity of flow. Knowing the cross-sectional area of the pipe allows the velocity measurement to be converted into volume (eg. litres).

The main benefit to this type chemical flow meter is that it is independent of temperature, density, pressure, and viscosity. This meter also has no moving parts and requires zero maintenance. A wide range of materials for liners, seals and process connections ensures chemical compatibility with even the harshest of chemicals.
Coriolis Chemical Flow Meter
This type of flow meter is incredibly versatile as it measures mass, flow, viscosity, temperature and density simultaneously. This provides you with maximum control and safety.
The Coriolis flow meter makes use of oscillating measuring tubes, and inertia through the twisting of these tubes. Phase difference is what provides us with a direct mass flow reading (eg. kg/hour) while the oscillation frequency determines the product density.

As the measuring tubes are always metallic, care needs to be taken to ensure the metal selected is compatible with all the chemicals to be measured.
Why use this flow meter? It offers a universal device for various measured parameters variables and is the most accurate on the market.
Vortex Chemical Flow Meter
Although Vortex flowmeters can be used to measure chemicals, they are mostly found measuring fluids such as steam and water which are common utilities found in chemical and petrochemical industries.
The way in which this works is based on the principle that obstacles cause turbulence downstream of them. So, a bluff body is placed inside each meter and, as the fluid travels down the pipe, vortices created alternately either side of the bluff body are then measured (due to pressure differences) to calculate the flow. The number of vortices shed over a given time is directly proportional to the flowrate.

There are many benefits associated with this type of meter, including a very wide temperature range, extremely robust, works on both conductive and non-conductive liquids and long-term stability.
